Meet Kirsten Coombs

Kirsten was elected overwhelmingly in 2016 to the Howard County Board of Education. In December 2018, she was unanimously elected as Vice Chair of the Board. She has chaired the Board of Education Legislative Committee for two years and served on the Audit Committee throughout her term. She also sits on the Legislative Committee for the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, a trade association that represents the 24 Local Education Entities (LEAs) of Maryland. She has testified in front of the Howard County Council, the Howard State Delegation, the Maryland General Assembly, and the Governor, Comptroller, and Treasurer on the Board of Public Works.

After graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park, with degrees in Accounting and History, Kirsten settled in Columbia. She started her career in public accounting, becoming a CPA, before moving into corporate finance for small and large companies. She did several Financial System and Software implementations and understands the importance of strong administrative supports like Accounting, IT Systems, and Human Resources to provide data for decision making.

Her daughter Lily has attended Running Brook ES, Wilde Lake MS, and is currently attending Wilde Lake HS. When Lily began elementary school, Kirsten decided to start consulting in order to have time for Lily’s school and ballet activities. She has enjoyed working on the PTA and supporting teachers in the classroom.

Kirsten also served on the Columbia Town Center Community Association and the Inner Arbor Trust Board. She graduated from University of Maryland, University College, with her MBA focused on international business.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading and using the wonderful resources of the Howard County Library System. She volunteers with Lily’s Ballet Mobile troupe, which performs for people who cannot go to the theatre. She loves trivia and board games.
